Private telecommunication satellite operator based in Bermuda, with mostly US funds. Has a subsidiairy based in the US: Protostar Satellite Systems.

Obtained $210 million financing in Nov 2006 to launch and operate its first satellite, to provide Asia with DTH services. Has already obtained $40 million in the past.

ProtoStar has signed definitive agreements with China Telecommunications Broadcast Satellite Corporation to purchase Chinasat 8, a completed but un-launched satellite, and with Space Systems/Loral to tailor the satellite's components for their footprint over Asia.

In fall 2008, the company agreed to collaborate with PLDT.

In Jul 2009, the company placed itself under chapter 11 protection. They could sell both satellites.
