Galaxy 11

S2253

General

Designation 26038 / 99071A
Launch date 22 Dec 1999
Country of origin United States
Mission Telecommunications
Geostationary orbit see below
Launch vehicle Ariane V125

Panamsat modified Galaxy 11 to enable operations from several of the company's orbital slots covering the United States.

The satellite suffers degradation of the solar panels and a claim for insurance constructive total loss was filled (approx $289 million) but the claim was rejected in Dec 2003; $130 million were obtained instead.

Specifications

Prime contractor Hughes
Platform HS-702
Mass at launch 4450 kg
Dry mass 2750 kg
Dimension stowed: 3.3 x 3.5 x 6.24 m
Solar array 31 m span, dual-junction gallium arsenide
Stabilization 3-axis
DC power EOL: 10400 W
Design lifetime 15 years
Station keeping Xenon Ion Propulsion System (XIPS)

two 2.4 m diameter + two 1.8 m diameter antennas
First satellite to use ion propulsion to go from geostationary transfer orbit to circular geostationary orbit, using its 25-cm XIPS ion thruster. It also carries a bipropellant engine of some kind.

This satellite has faulty HS-702 solar panels that may affect its lifetime.
