Went operational on 18 May 1999. Intelsat payed India's Department of Space $100 million over 10 years, for the use of 11 transponders.

The satellite is said to have cost Rs. 220 crores to build ($53 million). Launch costed $69 million and insurance $12 million.

Insurance paid $23 million for a partial failure.

Incorrectly announced as deorbited by TSE in Oct 2010 because of invalid NORAD data.

The satellite also carries a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) camera with one kilometre resolution (compared to VHRR's best of 2 km). The CCD camera's higher resolution would allow better tracking of cloud movements and more accurate estimation of winds.
